  1.  Some sad news to report.  Mike Schroeder, Gibson City, died in a farming accident on August 3lst.  Jeff Pape put this up on line, so all of you already know about it, but I did want to offer my sympathies to the family as well.  Joanne, his wife, has been the IKWF Regional director for many years.  Mike himself was a registered official and had just recently officiated at the Midwest Nationals.  Son Cord is the head coachd at  St. Thomas More High School in Champaign.  This is tragic loss for the Wrestling family as well.
  2.  Tragic news for Hall of Famer Rick Bay and the Michigan Wrestling family.  Rick’s wife, Denice, died August 28, 2007 in an automobile accident in Morro Bay, California.  They are planning a memorial service in a few weeks in Denice’s home town of Springfield, Oregon.  A memorial gathering will be held later in Palm Desert, California.  Rick requests no flowers and there are no plans at this time for charitable contributions.  Please send your condolences to:  Rick Bay -  73500 Agave Lane - Palm Desert, California 92260.

Dennis Hastert Center for Economics, Government and Public Policy will open in December.  It is a 5 million dollar renovation of the Memorial Student Center at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois.  This center will house  his Congressional papers.  It will be a new academic program and center.  It will operate under an additional 5 million dollars in endowments.  Dennis will have an office there and will take an active role within the center.  Can’t wait to see this.

Ed’s Word: Number: 2 September 4, 2007

Ed’s Word:  Number:  2               September 4, 2007

  1.  Edward Arlis of Batavia passed away.  He is the brother of Tom, who is the Head Coach at Batavia and teaches at Naperville North.  Tom can be reached at either of those two schools.

  2.  Phillip Brodnick of Lincolnway East has been Killed in Action in Iraq.  He Wrestled for LWE.

  3.  Tom Jarman who recently retired from Manchester, Indiana has been named as a Lifetime Honorary Member bh the National Wrestling Coaches Association.  His record was 414-144-1.  He coached for 40 years.;

  4.  Wrestling is not a contact sport - its a collision sport - dancing is a contact sport.

  5.  I like statistics - The NCAA newspaper reports that women’s rowing participation has increased 94.2% since 1995-96 - women’s lacrosse 58.7% and women’s soccer 58.7%; women’s indoor track 52.1%; softball 32.7% and cross country 25.2% while Men’s tennis has decreased by 7.9%; WRESTLING by 10.7% and mens swimming and diving by 14.1%.  Could it be that the drop in participation is because of schools dropping the activity - likewise the increase means that because of title 9 they have started up programs???  Dah.

6.  The following information may be of some interest to some of you.  It’s the ranking of the major junior colleges - their all americans and champions.  At least 163 schools since 1960 have had a least 1 all american.

     1,  North Idaho - 187 all americans - 49 champions.  2.  Iowa Central:  125-28;  3.  Ricks:  105-2 - dropped - they are now a 4 year school extension of Brigham Young;  4.  Colby:  87-17;  5.  Phoenix:  86-16 - Dropped;  6.  Ridegwater-Willmar:  85-4;  7.  Muskegon:  84-11;  7.  Cuyahoga, which includes metro-community and west:  84-10 - they have all dropped;  9.  Clackamas:  82-11;  10.  Northwest Wyoming:  81-9;  11.  TRITON:  80-15;  12. Lassen:  79-21;  13.  LINCOLN:  78-14; 15.  HARPER:  76-5;  15.  Gloucester-Sewell:  75-6′  17.  Nassau:  73-6;  18.  Garden City:  72-15 - dropped;  19.  Rochester:  70-9;  20.  Lamar:  66-25 - dropped;  21.  LaBette:  63-5;  22.  JOLIET:  60-11 - dropped;  23.  Ellsworth:  58-2;  24.  Middlesex:  53-5;  25.  Grand Rapids, Michigan:  50-8 - dropped;  26.  Meremac:  49-1;  27.  NE Colorado:  48-8 - dropped;  28.  Itasca:  46-1;  29.  Minnesota West-Worthington:  45-9;  30.  Delhi:  39-6 - dropped;  31.  Waldorf:  37-4 - moved to 4 year school;  32.  Farmingdale - 36-4 - dropped;  32.  Alfred:  36-3;  35.  Neosha County:  33-6;  34.  Mesa, Colorado:  34-9 - dropped; 36.  Morrisville:  32-4;  37. North Iowa Area:  28-4 - just restarted their program;  NE Oklahoma: 28-3 - dropped;  Niagara:  28-4 - North Dakota Science:  28-3 - dropped;  41.  Highline:  27-1;  Lakeland, Ohio: 27-7 - dropped;  43.  Forest Park:  26-2 - dropped;  Western Wyoming: 26-2;  45.  Trinidad: 24-6 - dropped; Northern Oklahoma: 24-6 - dropped;  47.  Arizona Western: 22-3 - dropped;  Pima: 22-2;  49.  WAUBONSEE:  21-1;  50.  SW Oregon:  20-l.

  7.  As the season gets close:  Consider this one:  Some people dream of success.  Others wake up and work hard for it.

  8.  Indecision is the key to flexibility.

  9.  I used to go fishing until it struck me: you can buy fish. What am I doing in a boat at 4:30 in the morning?  If I want a hamburger, I don’t track cattle down.

10.  The one thing that unites all human beings - regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status or ethnicity - is deep down inside we all believe we are above-average drivers.

11.  Failure is not an option.  It comes bundled with the software.

12.  Money can’t buy you happiness, but it can help you look for it quicker, in a convertible.

Hope all of you have had a good start for the coming season.  I still measure the calendar by fall athletics; winter, spring and fishing.     Any News:  send it to me.
