Ed’s Word: Number: 6 October 25, 2007

Ed’s Word:  Number:  6                         October 25, 2007

  1.  We have been informed that Hall of Famer and retired Wrestling Coach at East Aurora - Roy Fowley has died in Florida.  He died on October 7th - he leaves a  son and a daughter.  Roy graduated from Belleville high school and SIU Carbondale after a stint in the Navy.  He assisted at SIU for a year and then came to East Aurora where he was swimming and diving coach before taking over as the Head Wrestling coach in l959.  He retired from that position in 1975, but stayed on as the Head Golf coach.  His record at East was winning 2 UpState 8 crowns; a number of regionals - placed 3rd and 4th in the State - He had 10 state placewinners and l Champion.  He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1988.

  2.  Louis Reed, Joliet Central All Stater in the 70’s ;;has been named President of the Board of Aldermen for the City of St. Louis.  He is one of a group of 3 charged with reorganizing the St. Louis School System and controls a 800 million dollar budget.  He Wrestled for Mac McLaughlin.

  3.  Eric Juergens a 4 time All American from the University of Iowa has been named the new Head Coach at Augustana College.  He succeeds Pat Marsh who will be the City Manager in Monroe, Wisconsin.  Pat had a good career at Auggie winning 3 Conference Crowns.

  4.  High School Sports Participation by Schools lists Boys basketball with 17762 schools, followed by outdoor track; baseball, football, golf, crosscountry, soccer, Wrestling with 9445 schools), tennis and swimming.  This was for the 2006-07 year.

  5.  Participants in sports lists football with 1,104,548, basketball, outdoor track, baseball, soccer, Wrestling with 257,246, cross country, golf, tennis and swimming.  Wrestling has a lot of participants with only 300 colleges to go to.

  6.  Division I graduation rates for the year 2000 was posted recently - The overall rate was 71.5%’  Lacrosse 90.2;  Water Polo 87.l;  Gymnastics 84.8;  Swimming 83.8;  Volleyball 84.5;  Tennis 8l.8;  Golf 80.7;  Ice Hockey 79.l;  Soccer 75.3;  Cross Country/Track 73.4;  WRESTLING 73.2;  Baseball 67.3;  Football 64.7;  Basketball 63.6.  The big 3 had the poorest graduation rate, of all the others Wrestling is the only collision sport - the rest are non contact sports.

  7.  I think the only collision sports are football and Wrestling.  The only contact sport is probably social dancing.  All others are non-contact activities.

  8.  The National Wrestling Coaches Association All Star Meet will be held at the University of Oregon on November 19th.  Hopefully this will help U> Oregon’s cause, which is slated to drop Wrestling in 2008.

  9.  Jordan Blanton of Richmond-Burton has indicated Iowa U. as his choice;  Conrad Polz of Carl Sandburg has selected Illinois;  Garrett Goebel of Montini has picked Ohio State for football.

10.  Jimmy Chase - highly ranked wrestler from Glenbard North will likely be out until after Christmas with a torn ACL.

11.  The Olympic Trials will be held in Las Vegas - June 13-15, 2008.

12.  I hope that all of you are attending the rules interpretations:  Tonight the 25th is one at Addison Trail in this area and Monday the 29th will be the last one at Wheaton South at 7:00 pm

13.  The Sunkist kids tournament starts Friday the 26th and goes through the 28th - The New York Athletic Club tournament is November 16-18 and the Winter Classic at Danville, Illinois is Novembetr 23-24.

14.  February 14th will be the IWCOA Social down state - The State Tournament is February 15-16.  The State Dual Tournament at NIU will be February 23rd.

15,  The Illinois-Indiana Dual will be held Sunday March 16th at Hinsdale South high school - Mark your calendars for this one - remember we take two teams of the highest ranked seniors.  We have defeated Indiana the last 2 years - don’t break the streak.

16.  The IWCOA Hall of Fame Banquet will be held at Park Place in Countryside on Saturday, April 26, 2008 and the following day - Sunday - April 27th - will be the All State Banquet at the same place.

17.  Sectional assignments are out, but not the teams - Regionals at East Aurora, Lake Park, Romeoville and South Elgin will be at Naperville North for the individuals and at Glenbard North for the Teams.  Now the guess work starts - It looks like to me that Carl Sandburg will go elsehere this year, but Montini and Glenbard North could be in the same tournaments, but I would not leave Wheaton North out of this mix at all.

18,  It looks like Evergreen Park and Harvard will both move up to Class AA - there may be others and if there are it is high time that we readdress the possibility of 3 classes - its time.

19.  Peter Hume a Canadian National Wrestling Champion has died at age 54.  He was champion in the super heavyweight division in 1977-78 for Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario.  He was 6 foot 6 inches.  He also played football there.  I do not know how he did in the Internation scene.

Update on CK/Wrestling USA Dream Team Duals

I talked with Wrestling USA Magazine about their dual meet event they host along with Cliff Keen Wrestling.  I was amazed at how much money it’s going to cost to put together. Not too mention all the man power in keeping approximately 30 athletes housed and fed and on track for making weight…

Some of the events that usually take place at this event include a couple work outs as a team, a cultural event (like visiting a museum or I thought of going to Cubs/Sox game), a banquet, and of course the dual team. The only problem with going to the Cubs/Sox game is it would almost have to be opening day or at least one of the games of the opening series which would be probably very cold (or at least I remember most opening days people are in winter jackets still).

I did some quick estimates and I figure the event is going to cost somewhere around $30,000 to put together if we want to do it correctly. Now granted some of that money will be offset by entry fees to the event, but that is assuming we get a good turnout to the event (which is not a gurantee).

I spoke with a few people around the Il wrestling community and there seems to be some interest in putting this together, but it will take a lot of $$$ and a lot of man power to host this event. We’ll see if we can put it together…

IL vs USA Dual Meet (Sponsored by Wrestling USA Magazine and Cliff Keen)

What are your thoughts about bringing this to the great state of Illinois? I have submitted emails and made phone calls to three organizations I thought would be interested in helping make this a reality. We would need to come up with a bid guaranteeing to cover the costs of putting on this event (e.g. they don’t want to lose money on the event).

The goal is to help Friends of Wrestling (don’t know too much about this organization and can’t find anything on the web). We would put together the top Senior IL team and the sponsors Wrestling USA Magazine and Cliff Keen work on putting together the Dream Team (a team drawn from the entire United States).

We need to put together about $15,000 in guranteed money to get the event. WrestlingGear.Com is prepared to put up $5,000. So far we have someone that is interested in helping us with the venue. We’ll need lots of help with this event…

How you can help? Pledge $50 as a supporter of the event, your name will be listed as a sponsor of the event. Pledge to purchase 10 - $10 tickets for the event ($100 total). Pledge $1,000 a weight class. We are working out the details, but our thoughts are you will be recognized on the website, jumbo-tron and or announced at the event, along with promotional opportunities the day of the event.

So far the running total committed is $5,000 (I will update)

Post a pledge in the comments and I will update the totals or send us an email via http://www.wrestlinggear.com contact us form.
