1. The big news as of this date is: Long Time Assistant at Illinois - Jim Heffernan - will be the New Head Coach at the University of Illinois. Cal Perry will remain as an assistant. This is great news. Jim spent his early childhood days in Illinois - Graduated from St. Edwards in Ohio - Wrestled for Iowa - 4 time All American. Been at Illinois for 17 years - Great instructor. Congratulations to Jim. Everyone should be looking as to how to make Illinois even more powerful.
2. The job hunt at Iowa State goes on. Mark Manning of Nebraska turned ISU down, as did Terry Brands at Iowa. In the hunt and being interviewed are Kevin Jackson; Zeke Jones and Chris Bono. Jackson and Jones are also being considered at Arizona State.
3. The Northern Plains for Jr/Sr are scheduled for Waterloo, Iowa on May 14-16. This is a Regional.
4. The 2009 World Team Trials are scheduled for Council Bluffs, Iowa on May 30-31. This should be an excellent tournament.
5. The Gerdes Memorial Golf Outing is Monday, June 22nd at the same site as last year.
6. The Jeff Pape Foundation Golf Outing is July 28th - both outings are very good to Wrestling in general and a great outing.
7. Results from the NHSCA - Senior division: 125 - 4 - Brian Bokoski of Minooka; 119 - 6th - Joe Roth of Dixon; 130 - 8th - Justin Farmer of Lincolnway Central and 140 - 7 - Mark Marianovich of Marion Catholic. Illinois finished in 14th place. This division was won by California, followed by New York, Michigan, Pennsylvnia and New Jersey. The Junior Division: 119 - 3 - Keith Surber of O’Fallon; 135 - 8 - Matt Leibforth of Lemont and 285 - 8 - LaVelle Howard of Oak Park. Illinois finished in 14th place. Division won by Pennsylvania, followed by New Jersey, New York, California and Ohio. Sophomore Division had 125 - 2 - Edwin Cooper - Providence and 189 - 3 - Jeremy Bailey of Wilmington. Illinois was 11th. Division won by Pennsylvania, followed by New York, New Jersey, North Carolina and West Virginia. Freshman Division did not have any Illinois placewinners. Team won by Pennsylvania, followed by New York, New Jersey, Virginia, California and Ohio. Looks like these divisions were controlled by the East, or maybe that’s because very few from the midwest entered, Top performers from Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota did not compete.
8, In the Elementary Division - at 90 pounds - The Champion was Jesse Fulk of Florida. He is the grandson of Jan and Bob Fulk. Bob is the retired coach fromj Glenbard North.
9. The USA was Second to Cuba in the Pan American Free Style - No Illini. USA was also Second to Cuba in Greco Roman - No Illini. The USA won the Women’s Pan Americans - No Illini.

Carmel; 187-220 - 4th - Gage Harrah - Crystal Lake Central; 275 - 5 - Spencer George.. Looks like we have a few competitors from Illinois. Those that do not make the National teams to the duals or to the Individuals in North Dakota, should take a good look at the Midwest Nationals in Bloomington, July 11th. A great tournament to keep ones mind and body in shape for the Fall.
11. Said to report a death in the Wrestling Family. Ian Johnson, age 21 and a graduate of Neuqua Valley in 2005 has lost his battle with cancer. He Wrestled for Neuqua.
