2008 All-American to Face Ohio State’s Reece Humphrey

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Illinois junior All-American and fourth-ranked Jimmy Kennedy (Ingleside, Ill.) was selected to compete at the 43rd Annual National Wrestling Coaches Association’s National All-Star Classic, which will be held Nov. 24 at St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Kennedy, who placed fourth at 133 pounds at the 2008 NCAA Championships, will take on the host Buckeyes’ ninth-ranked Reece Humphrey, a two-time NCAA qualifier, in the first collegiate match between the two.

Kennedy is one of 15 Big Ten wrestlers who are scheduled to compete in the event. Five Iowa wrestlers, two each from Ohio State and Penn State, and one each from Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin will compete in the 10 regular matches, while Kennedy and a pair of Buckeye grapplers will participate in the exhibition matches at the All-Star Classic. The conference is sure to bring home at least five victories, as the matches at 133, 149, 174 and 184, and the exhibition between Kennedy and Humphrey will be contested by two Big Ten wrestlers.

The invitation is Kennedy’s first to the All-Star Classic and the event will wrap up Illinois’ third weekend of competition, as the rest of the team will be competing at the Missouri Open on Nov. 23. The Illini open the season on Saturday at Huff Hall with the instrasquad wrestle-offs at 11:30 a.m., then travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to face North Carolina State, Virginia and the host Tar Heels in the ACC/Big Ten Clash on Nov. 15.

Illini Celebrate Season at Annual Banquet
Poeta, Kennedy, Wise Take Home Top Honors

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Two-time All-American Mike Poeta was named the 2007-08 Most Valuable Wrestler at the team’s postseason banquet held Monday at Alexander’s Steakhouse. Poeta also took home one of the awards for most falls on the team as he tied with junior John Wise and freshman Grant Paswall. In addition, Wise was named the team’s Most Improved Wrestler and sophomore Jimmy Kennedy was recognized as the Most Dedicated Wrestler.

Poeta finished a stellar junior campaign in which he finished second at the NCAA Championships at 157 pounds and went a team-best 35-3, which tied for the ninth-most wins in a season in school history. He won the Big Ten title and also captured titles at the Midlands and Las Vegas Invitational tournaments, starting the season 22-0.

Kennedy had an incredible sophomore season, going 32-7 and finishing fourth at the NCAA Championships after placing second at the Big Ten Championships. He went undefeated during the Big Ten dual match season and won 18 of his final 21 matches in 2007-08.

Wise nearly doubled his career win total this year, going 31-16 after winning 16 bouts in each of the last two seasons. Wise placed fifth at the Big Ten Championships and took fourth at the Las Vegas Invitational, then went 3-2 at the NCAA Championships. He also defeated four opponents who were ranked higher than him on the season.

Northwestern, Big Ten, Midlands

Between the Midlands and Northwestern’s Big Ten home schedule, I had the opportunity to see 11/20 finalists actually wrestle before the NCAA Championship Finals. Now if Northwestern had wrestled home matches against, Ohio State and Michigan this year, that number would have jumped up to 16 finalists…and it’s possible those matches could have been at home (e.g. they saw them on the road I believe this year).

I’d encourage local high school wrestlers and ikwf and iesa wrestlers to get more involved with attending wrestling matches. I don’t think we are going to lose NU as a wrestling program any time soon, but we have lost or will lose a 3 wrestling program in the past two years.

Get involved in all three of the Division I programs we have in the state and the many other Junior College programs and D2 and D3 programs that still remain in Illinois…let’s put some butts in seats next year and support these wrestlers…

‘Cats Double Up Instate Rival Illinois, 22-11 .

Feb. 17, 2008

EVANSTON, Ill. – Amidst an intense atmosphere, 12th-ranked Northwestern racked up its third-straight dual win by defeating No. 8 Illinois Sunday, 22-11. The Senior and Alumni Day crowd witnessed decisive overtime victories by No. 5 Brandon Precin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) and No. 18 Keith Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edward), along with wins by four NU seniors that proved to be too much for Illinois to overcome.

The win gives the Wildcats an 8-7 record overall, 3-3 in conference. The loss drops Illinois to 12-3, 3-2 in the Big Ten.

The dual began for the Wildcats with 184-pounder Adil Kolovic (Chicago, Ill./Niles West) against Ben Friedl. The Wildcat senior had a late surge but couldn’t find a win on senior day, as Friedl managed three takedowns in the first two periods for an 11-5 decision that gave Illinois the early 3-0 lead.

No. 2 Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) answered the early Illinois lead for the Wildcats against No. 13 Patrick Bond at 197 lbs. Tamillow accrued a takedown in the first and an escape in the second to jump out to a 3-0 lead — a lead that would hold through the remainder of the match, as the Wildcat tied the dual at three apiece.

Northwestern’s top-ranked heavyweight, Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) scored an early takedown against No. 17 John Wise to begin the match. Wise answered with an escape, but Fox was quick with another takedown, and this time there would be no escape, as Fox rode Wise for the remainder of the period.

Entering the second, Fox displayed his ability to escape, scoring the only point of the period to go to the third leading 5-1. Wise finally got an escape in the third, but it was too little too late, as Fox held Wise off for a 6-2 decision, giving him his 19th-straight victory and giving the ‘Cats the 6-3 dual lead.

The dual’s third-straight match between ranked opponents came next at 125 lbs. with NU’s Precin and No. 9 Gabe Flores. Points were scarce in the match, as both wrestlers failed to score in the first. The match intensified in the second as Flores came close to a near fall, but couldn’t manage to contain Precin, as the Wildcat escaped for the match’s first point.

Flores did manage a late takedown in the second, giving the Illini a 2-1 lead entering the third. The match remained in question as time winded down, but Precin was able to overcome 55 seconds of riding time to score the ride out point to take the match into overtime.

Precin finished the match in the opening tiebreaker with a takedown, taking the match 4-2 and adding to the Wildcat lead to make the score 9-3.

133 lb. Eric Metzler (Luxembourg, Wis./Luxembourg-Casco) looked to continue the dual winning streak against No. 9 Jimmy Kennedy. An early Illini lead proved to be too much for the Wildcat, however, as Kennedy scored three takedowns on his way to a 11-3 major decision to cut Northwestern’s lead to 9-7.

Sulzer came out at 141 lbs. with a takedown against No.11 Ryan Prater in the first period, much to the chagrin of the Illinois fans. Regardless, the Wildcat entered the second period with a 2-0 lead. Prater managed to tie the match with a two-point near fall midway through the second, evening the score as the wrestlers entered the third.

Prater’s reversal in the third gave Illinois the 4-2 lead, but Sulzer was able to counter with a reversal of his own with just 17 seconds remaining in the match. Sulzer erased the riding advantage of Prater as well, taking the match to a tiebreaker.

After a close but scoreless first tiebreaker, Sulzer’s two-point nearfall in the second tiebreaker gave NU the lead, and despite Prater’s best effort, he couldn’t manage anything else as Sulzer took the match 7-4 and widened the NU lead in the dual to 12-7.

No. 6 Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio/Lakewood St. Edward) came out firing against Grant Paswall at 149 lbs. with an early takedown and over two and a half minutes of riding time in the first period alone to give the NU senior a 2-0 lead entering the second.

Lang doubled his lead in the second with an early reversal, but Paswall did manage an escape, giving Lang a 4-1 advantage after two periods. Lang, with the aid of two takedowns and two penalties in the third, scored a key 11-3 major decision victory for NU, making the score 16-7.

At 157 lbs., NU’s Andrew Nadhir (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) had his work cut out for him as he took on No. 2 Mike Poeta. Poeta continually racked up points on Nadhir, but the Illinois wrestler couldn’t get the tech fall victory as Illinois won the match with a 15-1 major decision, closing the NU lead to 16-11.

At 165 lbs., Dominic Marella (Roselle, Ill./Conant) faced Clint Arlis. The first round saw a slew of action but the points were hard to come by, as Marella scored the only point of the period on a stalling penalty. In the second, Marella doubled his advantage with an escape, giving the Wildcat a 2-0 lead. With only three seconds remaining in the second, Marella doubled his lead again with a takedown for a 4-0 lead entering the third.

Arlis managed to escape in the third, but Marella’s answering takedown stifled the comeback. Despite a late reversal and penalty point for Arlis, Marella came out on top with a 6-4 decision that gave NU the decisive 19-11 advantage entering the dual’s final match.

No. 12 Nick Hayes (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central) closed out the dual for Northwestern at 174 lbs. against No. 16 John Dergo. The match remained scoreless entering the second period, where Dergo opened up the scoring with a takedown midway through. Hayes tied the match early in the third, however, with his second escape of the match, and then scored a late reversal to seal the deal with a 4-2 decision, giving the Wildcats the 22-11 victory.

The Wildcats return to action at 4:30 p.m. Friday as they take to the road to face the No. 13 Wisconsin Badgers.

University of Illinois Update and Future Matches

#9 Illinois vs. #13 Wisconsin // at #17 Indiana
Feb. 8 / Feb. 10 // Huff Hall / University Gym // Champaign, Ill. /
Bloomington, Ind.

TV / Radio / Internet
Radio: Illinois‘ match against Wisconsin will be aired live on WDWS
AM-1400.
Play-by-play: Brian Moline
Expert Analyst: Troy Tirapelle
Web: Live audio/video streaming of Friday’s match will be available at
fightingillini.com.

* Mike Poeta (157) is ranked No. 1 in the nation for the ninth-straight
week in the NWCA rankings, tying his longest streak of topping the
national listings after he was ranked No. 1 for nine consecutive weeks in
2006-07. This marks the fifth-straight year that Illinois has had a
top-ranked 157-pounder (Alex Tirapelle: 2003-06; Poeta: 2006-08).

* Four Illinois wrestlers (Gabe Flores - 125, Mike Poeta - 157, John
Dergo - 174, John Wise - HWT) have reached 20 wins this season, marking
the third time in the last five years that four Illini have recorded 20
wins after just two Big Ten duals.

* #13 Patrick Bond (197) won 12 consecutive matches before dropping a
tough 1-0 decision to #2 Phil Davis (Penn State) on Feb. 3. However,
that continued Bond’s season-long trend of only losing to opponents ranked
higher than him.

* #9 Gabe Flores (125) and #9 Jimmy Kennedy (133) have been piling up
bonus points lately, with seven of their last 10 combined matches
resulting in bonus for the Illini. Flores has won his last seven bouts and
Kennedy his last five.

* The Fighting Illini have won four of their last five Big Ten duals
and 10 of their last 13 dating back to the 2005-06 season. Illinois is
10-2-1 in that stretch, with the losses coming to No. 6 Michigan on Feb.
1 and No. 1 Minnesota last season, and the tie against No. 23 Wisconsin
in 2006.

* For the second-straight year, Mark Johnson has two true-freshman in
his starting lineup with Ryan Prater wrestling at 141 and Grant Paswall
at 149. It marks just the second time in Johnson’s career that he has
had two rookies in the same lineup after Jimmy Kennedy (133) and John
Dergo (184) wrestled as true-freshman in 2006-07. Despite a pair of
losses last week, Prater rose to No. 10 in the NWCA poll with his 17-6
record, while Paswall’s 18-6 mark has him just outside the top 20 at 149.

Illini Look to Continue Home Cooking
No. 9 Illinois, 3-0 at home this the season, looks to continue its
strong performances at Huff Hall when it squares off against No. 13
Wisconsin at 7 p.m. Friday. The Badgers defeated Michigan State, 26-12, last
Friday before being edged by No. 1 Iowa, 22-20, on Sunday. Then, on
Sunday, the Illini visit Bloomington, Ind., to face the No. 17 Hoosiers at
1 p.m. (CT). Indiana defeated Michigan State, 23-9, last Sunday after
opening Big Ten action with consecutive losses to Wisconsin, Penn State
and Ohio State.

Weekend Matchups to Watch
With both Wisconsin and Indiana ranked near the Illini in the national
polls, both matches figure to have a number of close bouts. Here’s a
look at a few of those pairings that could turn the tide of the dual:

#13 Wisconsin at #9 Illinois
157: #1 Mike Poeta (ILL) vs. #3 Craig Henning (WIS)
The marquee matchup of the dual, Poeta comes in with a career 2-1
record against Henning, pinning him at the NWCA All-Star Classic earlier
this year and defeating him, 6-1, at the Las Vegas Invite. Henning downed
Poeta 7-2 last year at Big Tens. Poeta regrouped with a win against
Penn State’s second-ranked Dan Vallimont on Feb. 3 after dropping his
first bout of the year two days earlier. The two losses that Henning counts
on his record this season are Poeta at Las Vegas and a 2-0 loss to No.
9 Brandon Becker (Indiana) on Jan. 25. The All-Star Classic is
considered an exhibition meet.

133: #9 Jimmy Kennedy (ILL) vs. #11 Zach Tanelli (WIS)
Kennedy has been on fire of late, winning his last five and eight of
his last nine matches. He also has scored bonus points in three of his
last five bouts. Tanelli enters Friday’s match 19-5, 2-0 in the Big Ten
and 10-2 in duals. He has lost his last two bouts and three of his last
five, including a pair of defeats last weekend to No. 4 Franklin Gomez
(MSU) and No. 3 Joey Slaton (Iowa). Kennedy defeated Tanelli 7-3 at
last year’s dual, the only meeting between the two.

197: #4 Dallas Herbst (WIS) vs. #13 Patrick Bond (ILL)
Bond has won 11 of his last 12 bouts, with the only loss a 1-0 decision
to No. 2 Phil Davis (PSU) on Feb. 3. Herbst is 23-1 and has won his
last 10 matches. The two square off for the first time this year after
splitting a pair of decisions last season. Bond earned a 7-3 win at the
teams’ dual in 2007 but dropped a 4-3 decision at Big Ten Championships.

#9 Illinois at #17 Indiana
125: #2 Angel Escobedo (IND) vs. #9 Gabe Flores (ILL)
Flores comes into the bout the winner of his last seven and nine of his
last 10 matches. He also has scored bonus points in four of his last
five bouts. Escobedo is 22-0, 4-0 in the Big Ten, and has scored bonus
points in 15 matches. Flores looks to avenge his defeat by Escobedo at
Midlands earlier this year after the two split a pair of bouts last
season.

133: #9 Jimmy Kennedy (ILL) vs. #12 Andrae Hernandez (IND)
Kennedy has won five consecutive matches, including three with bonus
points, and eight of his last nine. Hernandez comes it at 17-5, but just
2-2 in Big Ten dual action. The pair had three extremely close bouts
last season with Kennedy winning, 5-4, at the dual, Hernandez pulling out
a 3-1 decision at Big Tens and the Hoosier grabbing a 4-3 victory at
NCAAs.

Wisconsin Series History
The Fighting Illini are 34-27-3 all-time against Wisconsin and 16-3-2
in Champaign. Illinois also has a nine-match unbeaten streak against the
Badgers, going 8-0-1 during Mark Johnson’s tenure. The Orange and Blue
haven’t lost to Wisconsin since 1992.

Indiana Series History
Illinois leads the all-time series with the Hoosiers by a 43-39-1
margin, but Indiana holds a 25-12-1 advantage in matches in Bloomington.
Mark Johnson is 12-2 against the Hoosiers, 5-2 in Bloomington and hasn’t
lost to IU since 1996, a string of 10 matches.

Bonus Points Pile Up For Lightweights
While they both have been wrestling well lately, No. 9 Gabe Flores
(125) and No. 9 Jimmy Kennedy also have been piling up bonus points in
their victories. During Flores’ current seven-match winning streak, four
have been with bonus. Three of Kennedy’s five-straight wins have racked
up bonus points as well.
